    Diabetes management involves making certain lifestyle changes for diabetes. These changes are important as these can help keep diabetes under control and mitigate its effects on the body.

    But what changes does a person need to make if they get diagnosed with diabetes?

    4 Lifestyle Changes for Diabetes

    Lifestyle changes for diabetes help diabetics lower the risk of complications. When not managed properly, diabetes can lead to an increased risk for hypertension, heart disease, kidney problems and even nerve damage. Aside from this, high blood sugar levels also cause inflammation in the body.

    Here are some lifestyle changes for diabetes that can help prevent these from happening:

    1. Make healthier food choices

    First would be to make healthier food choices. This means cutting back on sweets, fatty food, food high in salt, as well as junk food and other processed food items1.

    Instead, it would be best to replace these food with healthier choices such as fresh fruits, vegetables, lean meat, fish, nuts, and seeds. These can help you control your blood sugar levels better, and also help to lower the risk of complications resulting from diabetes.

    Aside from choosing the right types of food, portion sizes are also important. Just because you’re eating healthy food, it doesn’t mean that you can eat as much as you want. You’ll need to control your portion sizes in order to make sure you’re not overeating.

    2. Keep an eye on your sugar intake

    One of the lifestyle changes for diabetes you can make is to keep an eye on your sugar intake2. This means being extra careful with the food that you eat, especially when it comes to carbohydrates.

    One of the tools that diabetics can use is what we call Glycemic Index. The Glycemic Index classifies carbohydrate-containing foods according to their potential to raise your blood sugar level. Foods with a high glycemic index value tend to raise your blood sugar higher and faster than do foods with a lower value.

    For example, if you’re a diabetic then it’s fine to still eat white rice. However, you’ll need to cut back on how much you eat as the carbohydrates can cause your blood sugar levels to go up. This can also happen with sweet fruits such as mangoes, watermelon, pineapple, as well as dried fruits such as dates.

    3. Exercise more

    Engaging in more exercise is another one of the lifestyle changes for diabetes that you need to make. Exercise does a lot for your body as it helps keep your muscles strong and healthy, keeps the heart strong, and helps keep your weight under control. It can also keep blood sugar levels in check3.

    You don’t necessarily have to engage in intense exercise. Activities like walking around, doing jumping jacks, cycling, or even going up and down the stairs can help you stay fit. Ideally, you need to engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily in order to reap positive health benefits4.

    If you’re able to engage intense workouts, then all the better! Exercise is good for your overall health, so it’s always a good thing to stay active.

    4. Consult your doctor regularly

    One important thing you’ll need to do if you are diagnosed with diabetes is to consult your doctor regularly. This is important because your doctor can help you with controlling your blood sugar levels, and making sure that you’re on the right track5.

    This way, you’ll know if the lifestyle changes for diabetes that you’re doing are enough, or if you need to change something else.

    Additionally, if you experience any strange symptoms or if you have concerns, it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor about it. They can also give you advice on what food to eat and what to cut back on, as well as which exercises you would benefit most from.

    Remember, your doctor is your partner when it comes to your health. So it’s wise to develop a good relationship with them, especially if you have diabetes.
