No Hair? No Problem! Here's How You Can Get a Hair Transplant

No Hair? No Problem! Here's How You Can Get a Hair Transplant

Great hair is commonly associated with beauty and confidence. That’s why balding and thinning hair may be a source of insecurity for both men and women. Following this, there have been many advancements in hair transplant procedures.

What is a hair transplant?

This is a cosmetic surgery where hair is moved to an area that is bald or contains thinning hair. A hair transplant is usually used as a way to improve baldness or hair loss.

Is it effective?

Surgeons nowadays are capable of providing patients with natural-looking results. However, while progress has been made when it comes to methods and technology, final results are still dependent on the surgeon. It is recommended that you read up and find an experienced hair loss surgeon to have reliable results.

Types of hair transplant procedures

There are two types of procedures:

Follicular unit transplantation (FUT or strip method)

In this procedure, the surgeon removes a thin strip of skin from the back or side of your head to extract individual follicles of hair. The surgeon will then relocate the individual hair follicles to areas that are balding or where the hairline is receding.

Follicular unit extraction (FUE)

This is the more common hair transplant method. In this procedure, the surgeon will shave the back of the head, and remove individual hair follicles one by one.

Unlike in FUT, the surgeon will not remove a strip of skin from the scalp. Instead, they will go straight to taking individual hair follicles. These follicles are then placed into balding or areas with thinning hair.

Can I get a hair transplant?

Men and women alike may be candidates for this procedure.

Consider these things before getting a hair transplant:

  • You still have enough healthy hair on your scalp that you can transplant hair follicles into more needy areas.
  • You can still grow hair on the thinning areas

Consult with your surgeon or dermatologist on what would be the best option for you.

Results and recovery

After the procedure, patients can expect to go back to work after three days. In the first two weeks after the operation, the grafts made will not be secure, so added care is necessary. Surgeons usually advise that recovering patients tone down their physical activities for the first month to prevent any scarring.

It is important to note that the transplanted hair will usually fall out. This is normal. The fallen hair will usually grow back after.

Patients can expect results 6 to 9 months after the operation. For some patients, results may take as long as 12 months to appear.

Risks and complications

Some of the risks and complications associated with the procedure include:

  • Tight, achy, or swollen scalp for a few days after the operation
  • Temporary scabbing from where the hair was transplanted
  • A single or numerous scars
  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Allergic reaction to anesthetics
  • Ineffective or zero results

Hair transplants in the Philippines

There are many hair transplant options in the Philippines. Local hair transplant clinics offer both FUT and FUE procedures.

Key takeaway

A hair transplant is an operation that helps balding or hair-thinning patients to gain natural-looking hair. With today’s advancements in cosmetic surgery, surgeons are capable of producing more natural-looking locks.
