Agaricus Mushroom (Agaricus blazei Murill)

Agaricus mushroom (Agaricus blazei) is a fungus that is native to Brazil and cultivated in other countries such as Japan and China, mainly as ingredients for herbal supplements and extracts.

What is Agaricus mushroom used for?

Agaricus mushroom has not been approved by the FDA for any specific treatment, whether alone or in combination with other medications, however, the touted medicinal properties of Agaricus mushroom include:

  • Cancer treatment and prevention
  • Treatment of inflammatory conditions
  • Treatment of allergies
  • Complimentary treatment in diabetes mellitus
  • Antioxidant
  • Immunity boosting

How does it work?

While the exact mechanism of action of Agaricus mushroom has not been established, research has shown that it is rich in β-glucans. β-Glucans are structural sugars that are commonly found in the cell walls of fungi, like the Agaricus mushroom. β-Glucans have antitumor, anti-infective, and anti-inflammatory properties which are mediated by the body’s immune cells.

Before using this drug, tell your doctor if you are/have:

  • Pregnant or breastfeeding.
