Your skin is an organ, and much like your other organs, it often changes the way it looks and functions over time. Our skin loses its youthful plumpness and elasticity, and so it’s natural to wonder: what prevents premature aging of skin?

A number of factors contribute to our overall skin health. And more than just aesthetic purposes, keeping our skin healthy is vital to our overall health. After all, the skin is our body’s largest organ.

What Prevents Premature Aging of Skin?

Before we get into what ingredients you may want to find in your products, let us discuss how you put on your products. While this seems like a small thing, it could have a great effect on your skin.

Exfoliate gently

What prevents premature aging of skin? Cleansing and exfoliating it gently. When you wash your face, avoid using your cleanser and harsh strokes. Scrubbing motions irritate the skin, so it would be ideal to use gentle upward and circular motions instead.

Use Soft, Clean Towels to Pat Dry

Whenever you wash your face, make sure you have a soft and clean towel ready. The towel for your hair and body may have residue that could clog your pores.

Additionally, you should make sure to gently pat dry your face, not rub it dry. It is similar to why you should not scrub your skin – it irritates and pulls at your skin.

Do Not Rub Your Eyes

After a long work day, you may experience eye strain. But it’s important to refrain from rubbing your eyes. Most people say that rubbing your eyes could create wrinkles.

However, what it does is irritates your delicate eye skin, which can make it look swollen or red. When you do this often, it could make your eye skin thicken like a callous.

What Prevents Premature Aging of Skin: Anti-Aging Ingredients

When you look for products for your skin, such as a cleanser and moisturizer, take a look at the ingredients carefully. It would be wise for you to make sure that they contain ingredients that are suitable for your skin and could fight the aging process.

Below are some ingredients to look for. However, do take note that these ingredients do not undergo the same rigid testing as therapeutic agents and are not FDA approved. As such, they remain questionable in terms of anti-aging. At best, it is reasonable to seek out these ingredients because of the scientific evidence backing their utility.

Caffeine

Caffeine could literally “wake your skin up” because it could make your skin look firmer. According to this study, caffeine could slow down the photo-aging process in the skin, has UV radiation protection, and has potent antioxidants.

Hydroxy Acids

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) include glycolic, citric and lactic acid, and can be found in a variety of food. They are used to remove dead skin cells (exfoliate). Using an AHA product regularly prepares your skin to better absorb other products and stimulates the growth of smooth, evenly pigmented new skin.

Hyaluronic Acid

This is a great moisturizer for aging skin because it could help retain water. Aging skin tends to become dry easily, so keeping it supple and moisturized can decrease the aging process and encourage a youthful glow.

Plant Oils

Plant oils such as jojoba oil or coconut oil can be a great ingredient to fight signs of aging, especially for sensitive skin.

Jojoba oil in particular contains B-complex vitamins, zinc, and vitamin E. With regular use, it could help lighten dark under-eye circles and decrease eye puffiness. It is also full of antioxidants and is very moisturizing.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C, or ascorbic acid, is a strong antioxidant. It could help reduce wrinkles and fine lines and protect your skin from sun damage. It would be wise to keep products with vitamin C stored away from sunlight and air.

Anti-Aging Foods

There is only so much that products could do for your skin externally. It would always be ideal to make sure you are taking care of your skin from the inside-out to potentially get the best results.

For starters, drinking enough water each day is ideal to maintain healthy skin. But food also plays a role. Having a balanced and nutritious diet will keep your body strong and prevent illnesses; however there are no known food groups that will decrease your wrinkles once they happen. If you want to find extra ways to enhance your skin, here are some examples of anti-aging foods.

Hydration for Good Health: Tips and Benefits

Watercress

Watercress has manganese, potassium, calcium, and tons of vitamins that are great for your skin. It is like a skin antiseptic and has lots of antioxidants.

Nuts

Nuts, particularly almonds, contain lots of vitamin E that could protect skin from UV rays, retain skin moisture, and repair skin tissue. Try to eat your nuts with the skin – around 50% of antioxidants are in the skin.

Pomegranate Seeds

Pomegranates are full of different antioxidants and high in vitamin C. Plus, it also contains punicalagin, which could preserve collagen in your skin.

Avocado

Avocado has lots of inflammation-fighting fatty acids, which could promote supple and smooth skin. Plus, it contains lots of nutrients that could decrease the negative signs of aging.

Protect Your Skin from the Sun

The UV rays from the sun can take a toll on your skin, even if you are indoors. It can make your skin prematurely age and lead to wrinkles. Thankfully, this is very preventable.

9 Ways Sun Exposure Can Affect Your Health

Overexposure of UV rays can cause tons of damage to your skin. Some examples of skin damage from overexposure to UV rays can include leathery and dry skin, wrinkles, fine lines, discolorations (freckles, age spots, etc), and such.

Try to apply sunscreen generously at least 15 minutes before you leave your home. It would also be wise to reapply sunscreen around every 2 hours, especially if you are exposed to the sun for a long time.

When choosing a sunscreen, try to choose one that is at least 15 SPF. Additionally, try to choose a sunscreen that is “broad spectrum”, which means it protects you from UVA and UVB rays.

While aging skin may be inevitable, there are ways you can slow down the process. You can follow the tips above to keep your skin looking youthful and glowing.
