Veneers Teeth Pros and Cons: Are They Good for Your Teeth

Dental veneers, also known as dental laminates, are becoming more and more popular. It helps to know more about  this option before deciding to get it. What are the veneers teeth pros and cons? What is the procedure like and who is it for?

This article will attempt to answer all of those questions.

    What are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin coverings placed over the teeth to give a better appearance. They are designed to look like natural teeth. They can be used for correcting several dental issues including:

    • Stained teeth
    • Chipped teeth
    • Worn teeth
    • Uneven spaces between the upper teeth

There are two types of veneers in used today. These are the porcelain veneers and the composite resin veneers.

    Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers while more expensive offer certain advantages:

    • Porcelain veneers are long-lasting and strong
    • They look natural
    • Compared with using a crown, less teeth will have to be removed
    • Porcelain veneers do not stain easily

The problem with porcelain veneers is that they are little more expensive and the installation can take a long time or several appointments with your dentist. The dentist also needs to take a bigger chunk of sound tooth structure for porcelain veneers compared to composite veneers.

    Composite Resin Veneers

If you want a more affordable and quicker way of getting veneers then you should go for those that are made with composite resin. These types of veneers have the following benefits:

    • Require less enamel to be removed
    • Need fewer visits; sometimes it just takes one visit
    • They are easier to fix compared to porcelain

These are the two main types of dental veneers that you can get. It is best to follow your dentist’s advice when choosing which veneer to use.

    Before You Get Veneers

There are certain things that you need to know before have your veneers installed. Here are the main ones:

    1. First of all, your teeth and gums should be healthy. If you have tooth or gum disease or if there is any decay on your teeth those must be treated first before the veneers are installed.
    2. Veneers are not a good option for those who grind their teeth during sleep. Veneers can break or chip easily so if you grind your teeth when sleeping, you need to tell your dentist.
    3. The dentist will only remove the necessary amount of enamel when installing veneers but you should remember that the process can’t be reversed when done.
    4. Veneers will become loose and new ones may have to be installed. Your dentist will tell when the approximate time for getting a new one will be.
    5. You need to have regular dental visits to maintain your veneers and check on the health of your gums.

Your dentist will be guiding you through the entire process but it is important to know about these basics.

    How Long Will Veneers Last?

One of the most common questions about veneers is how long will they last. It’s quite understandable that you would want to know because they are quite expensive.

The average lifespan of porcelain veneers is around 10 years but with proper maintenance and care, it is possible for them to last 20 years. While the way that you take care of your veneer is up to you, keep in mind that porcelain is not the toughest of materials and veneers are very thin. Accidents can happen no matter how careful you are.

Some people wonder if veneers are permanent solutions. They are not. But again, if you take care of them and if you follow instructions, they should last long.

    Veneers Teeth Pros and Cons

Like any other dental solution, veneers have pros and cons. Here are some of the pros that it has to offer:

    1. Veneers can be quite pleasing and they look quite natural when they are installed properly.
    2. Getting veneers is a quick and relatively easy way of correcting chipped, discolored, and damaged teeth.
    3. Veneers require very little preparation for the teeth.
    4. Veneers will not get stained anymore so you can forget about that problem once you have them installed. However, this is not true for composite veneers.
    5. There are different colors that are available for veneers to match the color of the rest of your teeth, which would make it look more natural.

On the other hand, here are the cons of using veneers:

    1. Although veneers look very natural now, at the end of the day, they are still artificial solutions. Some people may want more natural dental solutions.
    2. Porcelain veneers can be very expensive. A veneer can cost from $1,000 to $1,500 and when you multiply that by the number of teeth that require veneers, it can amount to a great deal.
    3. Veneers are designed to be durable. But at the end of the day, these covers are still fragile and are prone to chipping and getting cracked.
    4. There is also the fact that veneers cannot be reversed. If your teeth had to be reduced to install the veneers there is no going back to correct it.
    5. Since some teeth enamel may have to be removed to install veneers, you may end up having sensitive teeth after the veneer is installed. You might need to have a lifestyle change for those who choose composite veneers because these are easily stained. No more coffee, tea, and colored drinks for you.

Now that you know more about veneers teeth pros and cons, you should be more confident now to walk into your dentist’s office and ask if you are qualified for veneers.
