What You Need To Know About Scented Candles For Relaxation

What You Need To Know About Scented Candles For Relaxation

Many people swear by the positive effects of scented candles. They claim that using them improves their mood, decreases their anxiety, and relieves their stress. But, are scented candles safe, considering you are inhaling smoke and other chemicals? What are the benefits of scented candles? The answers and more in this article.

Do Scented Candles Really Work?

So you want to try scented candles to destress, perhaps after a long day? The question is, do they really work?

Aromatherapy is backed by science. It has long since been acknowledged as a great way to relax and destress. Science has it that certain fragrances can even relax tensed muscles. Likewise, the inhalation of some fragrances can improve a person’s emotional and spiritual conditions.

But, of course, each person is different. So, scented candles may or may not work for you.

Candles Are Not Created Equal

Your concerns over safety are valid because not all candles are the same.

First up, many candles in the market are made from paraffin wax, which some people believe to be harmful when used regularly. Reports say they release chemicals that potentially harm the environment and respiratory system.

The recommendation is to choose natural candles. These candles are made from other natural ingredients, such as beeswax, coconut oil, and soy.

Next, be mindful of the scents. Many scented candles use synthetic, potentially harmful fragrances. The idea is to select those made with high-quality essential oils

Bottom Line

If you’re keen on taking advantage of scented candles, consider choosing ones made from natural ingredients and high-quality essential oils. At the store, consider asking for aromatherapy candles instead of scented candles.

Are Scented Candles Safe?

What if you choose the usual scented candles? Will it really cause you harm? Will it be safer to use aromatherapy candles?

A 2007 study found that burning candles, including paraffin candles, releases minuscule amounts of chemicals that don’t appear to be harmful to our health and environment.

On the other hand, experts relate that natural candles, such as those made with soy, release less soot and toxic chemicals than paraffin candles.

Still, doctors point out that intake of any smoke can be harmful, especially if you have respiratory conditions.

Safety Tips

Using scented candles to destress? Here are some safety tips according to experts:
  • Only use high-quality candles made with natural ingredients and premium essential oils.
  • Trim the wick if it gets too long. The ideal length is 10 to 15 mm. The longer the wick, the more it’ll produce soot.
  • Make sure you only use candles in a well-ventilated room.
  • Instead of blowing out the candle, use a candle snuffer instead. You can also dip the wick in wax.
