Tyrothricin (topical antibacterial agent)

Tyrothricin is an antibiotic peptide complex produced and extracted from the bacteria Brevibacillus parabrevis (now Aneurinibacillus migulanus). It is effective against gram-positive bacteria and may be combined with other active ingredients like benzocaine.

What is Tyrothricin used for?

  • Mouth and throat infections
  • Preventing infections before dental surgeries
  • Skin infections

How should I take Tyrothricin?

Appropriately apply the medication based on its dosage form. For lozenges, take the medication by mouth and allow it to dissolve slowly without chewing or swallowing it.

For the topical route, apply a thin layer of the prepared solution onto the affected area. Do not apply the medication into the nasal cavity or closed body cavities.

How do I store Tyrothricin?

This product is best stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store it in the bathroom or the freezer. 

There may be different brands of this drug that may have different storage needs. So, it is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

You should not flush this product down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Additionally, it is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

What is the dose for an adult?

For the local treatment of oropharyngeal infections: take 4-10 mg per day in the form of a lozenge.

For skin infections (as a 1/1000 diluted solution): apply as directed by your physician.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
