Best Home Remedy for Jock Itch: Easy DIY Treatments You Can Do

Jock itch is a fungal infection that is most common in men and adolescent boys, although women are also able to get affected. This fungal infection – medically called tinea cruris – usually develops in moist areas around the genital area, such as the groin, inner thighs, and buttocks. Learn more about this condition and the best home remedy for jock itch.

    What Causes Jock Itch?

This skin infection is common among those who are active and sweat a lot, like athletes. The symptoms of jock itch are uncomfortable and can include redness and extreme itchiness. This infection is also contagious as it can be spread through skin contact or through sharing of clothes and other garments like towels.

The causes of jock itch include the following:

    • Fungi. The primary cause of jock itch is the group of fungi called dermatophytes. This fungus grows in moist environments and thus the groin area is a prime area for its development.
    • Skin friction by tight undergarments. Wearing tight undergarments is most likely to create skin friction that irritates the skin. Sweat is also possible to get trapped inside these tight undergarments, which can lead to the development of fungi.
    • Shared clothing. Since fungi cause contagious jock itch, used clothing may also be contaminated with fungi. Wearing borrowed undergarments or clothing from someone who has jock itch can transfer the fungi from one person to another.

    Risk Factors

Any gender can be affected by jock itch. However, certain people are more prone to jock itch depending on these risk factors:

    • Gender. Males are more prone to getting jock itch as the male genitalia tends to experience more skin-to-skin friction and trapped humidity.
    • Diabetes. Patients with diabetes in particular are prone to jock itch. They are easy to catch fungi and get skin infections, even from skin friction.
    • Obesity. Since fungi multiply faster in warm and moist areas of the body, obese people are also prone to jock itch. Obese people also tend to have more skin folds that can be the target for fungi to grow on.
    • Weak Immune System. People with a weak immune system due to HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, and chronic illnesses may be prone to jock itch as this skin infection is highly contagious.
    • Humidity. Humid weather causes people to sweat a lot. And when people perspire, this increases the opportunity for fungi to grow.
  • Fungal Infections. An already existing fungal infection also increases the risk of developing jock itch. It can be contagious and spreads to other body parts, such as the groin area.
  • Best Home Remedy for Jock Itch

Several home remedies can be used to kill fungi and get rid of jock itch. However, aside from all of these home remedies, the best home remedy for jock itch is a change in lifestyle habits.

It’s important to always consult your doctor before trying to treat any case on your own.

Here are some great home remedies for jock itch:

    Change Diet Plan

People who consume food high in sugar and carbohydrates are prone to the development of fungus. Instead, consume more fruits and vegetables. It is also helpful to reduce alcohol and beer intake. A healthy lifestyle can keep the jock itch from getting worse.

    Garlic and Honey

These have natural anti-fungal properties. Garlic is an effective bacteria-killer, while honey can control the symptoms such as the itchy sensation due to the infection. When applied, garlic causes a slight burn and irritation of the skin. Then, the honey will act as a moisturizer that will soothe the effect of garlic.

More research is needed to test the effectiveness of this remedy, so it is best to consult your doctor first.

    Calendula

Its extract is known to have natural anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. When used, it gives a cooling effect on the skin. It has good natural properties that will be effective in treating jock itch.

    Aloe vera

It has different natural properties that are perfect for treating skin infections and diseases. It is also effective in preventing itch and relieving pain due to skin infection.

    Apple cider vinegar

This is great for stopping the growth of bacteria and fungi in jock itch. Before the application, it is better to place it in the refrigerator and keep it cool to give a cooling effect when applied on an inflamed jock itch.

    Oatmeal and Epsom salt bath

Useful for giving relief and healing for jock itch, these can be used by putting two cups of oatmeal and one cup of Epsom salt in warm water before taking a bath.

    Shower regularly

Clean the groin area regularly with mild soap and warm water to avoid more complicated infections. Also, keep it dry to prevent the growth of fungi.

    Wear loose clothing

Wear comfortable undergarments to protect the skin from irritation and friction.
