The best baby wipes: What to look out for

Wipes help keep your baby clean, but don’t just use any kind of baby wipes!

Baby wipes are a convenient and readily available option for keeping your baby clean. This is why it is important to choose the right baby wipes that are strong enough to wipe away dirt and debris, but gentle enough that they won’t cause any irritation1.

So what makes a good baby wipe? Here are some factors that parents need to consider when choosing the right kind of wipes for their baby.

Safe for regular use on sensitive skin

Our skin helps protect us from viruses, bacteria, and sometimes chemicals that cause harm to our bodies. While the same is true for babies, their skin is not yet as developed as that of older children or adults2.

Babies’ skin is more prone to having rashes, fungal infections, and other skin problems3. However, many of these conditions can be prevented by keeping your baby’s skin clean through bathing, washing, or using baby wipes.

Helps keep the diaper area clean

In addition, wipes are regularly used on one of the most common places where babies experience skin irritation, the diaper area. This is the section of their skin that’s usually covered by a diaper, and constantly exposed to moisture and other irritants from pee and poop.

Keeping your baby’s diaper area clean is essential to minimizing skin problems. While this can be done through the use of cloth and water, one study4 has found that properly formulated baby wipes can be more effective at keeping the skin in the diaper area clean and free from germs.

It should clean in one wipe

Another common skin condition among babies is dermatitis, wherein the skin can experience irritation, swelling, or rashes.

Keeping a baby’s dermatitis-prone skin clean can be tricky, especially when using wipes, because certain ingredients or chemicals can potentially become a trigger for dermatitis5

Another thing to consider is that wiping your baby’s skin too much can be a cause of irritation. Wiping multiple times, even with baby wipes, can cause chafing and irritate the skin6.

This is why it is important for baby wipes to be able to clean in one wipe, or as few wipes as possible. In addition, using wipes that have thick, embossed sheets not only helps clean your baby’s skin in fewer wipes, they can also prevent you from using up more sheets than needed.

Hypoallergenic materials

Another important consideration for parents choosing baby wipes is the material that the wipe is made of. Ideally, baby wipes should be made of hypoallergenic materials so that they don’t irritate a baby’s skin or trigger any  adverse skin reactions.

While it is true that water and cloth can safely be used to clean your baby’s skin, properly formulated baby wipes can work better in keeping baby’s skin healthy, moist, and free from infection5,7.

To keep your baby comfortable and clean, use Nursy

A good baby wipe is hypoallergenic, has thick, embossed sheets that helps clean in one wipe, has no harmful or irritating ingredients. When it comes to keeping your baby’s skin clean, and making sure they’re comfortable, choose Nursy baby wipes.

With Nursy, you have multiple options to choose from. Nursy Unscented has vitamin E and aloe vera extract which helps keep your baby’s skin moisturized. Nursy Powder Scent, which has antibacterial properties to protect baby from germs, and also helps in keeping your baby smelling fresh.
