Uses

California poppy (Eschscholzia californica) is an herb that is part of the family Papaveraceae. It is the state flower of California in the United States. The flower is usually bright orange or yellow in color with small green stems and leaves.

While the California poppy is in the same family as the opium poppy (Papaver somniferum) and poisonous types of poppies, it does not contain the same constituents that can be used as an opioid or poison.

California poppy has the following uses:

  • Insomnia
  • Treatment of body pain and aches
  • Anxiety
  • Diuretic
  • Treatment of incontinence (bedwetting)

How does it work?

Studies have shown that the California poppy contains several alkaloids that are responsible for its health benefits.

These alkaloids bind to GABA receptors and have anti-inflammatory and anticholinesterase activity. Other alkaloids bind to serotonin and noradrenaline receptors, which have antidepressant and antianxiety effects.
