Otrivin (xylometazoline HCl, nasal decongestant)

    Otrivin is the brand name of the drug xylometazoline hydrochloride. Xylometazoline is a nasal decongestant that can be purchased over the counter in several countries. Currently, it is not available in the Philippines or USA.

    Uses

    What is Otrivin used for?

    This product relieves nasal congestion or stuffy nose caused by allergies, colds, and pollution. By removing congestion, it is easier to breathe, hear, and sleep.

    How should I take Otrivin?

    Read the directions on the packaging for complete information. Check the label and expiration date.

    Remove the cap and press down on the applicator until an even spray is released. Using a tissue, blow your nose gently to clear out any excess mucus. Carefully insert the nozzle into one nostril and press down on the applicator and inhale the spray deeply. Repeat this step in the other nostril. Once you are done, wipe the nozzle with a clean tissue, replace the cap, and store it in the proper place.

    How do I store Otrivin?

    Store this product at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. To prevent drug damage, you should not store it in the bathroom or the freezer. 

    There may be different brands of this drug that may have different storage needs. So, it is important to always check the product package for instructions on storage, or ask your pharmacist. For safety, you should keep all medicines away from children and pets.

    You should not flush this product down the toilet or pour them into a drain unless instructed to do so. Additionally, it is important to properly discard this product when it is expired or no longer needed. Consult your pharmacist for more details about how to safely discard your product.

    What should I know before using Otrivin?

    What is the dose for an adult?

    Nasal spray: 

    The usual recommended dose for adults is one or two sprays in each nostril every 8 to 10 hours. The head should be tilted slightly forward while using the spray. Breathe deeply.

    Measured dose pump: 

    The usual recommended dose for adults is one spray in each nostril every 8 to 10 hours. The head should be tilted slightly forward while using the pump. Before using the pump for the first time, prime it by spraying several times into the air until a fine mist is seen.

    Nasal drops: 

    The usual recommended dose for adults is 2 or 3 drops in each nostril every 8 to 10 hours. The head should be tilted back while using the drops.

    What is the dose for a child?

    Children up to 6 years of age:

    Administer 1 drop or spray of a 0.05% solution into each nostril every eight to ten hours as needed.

    Children 6 to 12 years of age:

    Administer 2 or 3 drops or sprays of a 0.05% solution into each nostril every eight to ten hours as needed.

    How is Otrivin available?

    Otrivin is available in the following dosage forms and strengths:

    • Nasal spray 0.05%, 0.1%
    • Nasal drops 1 mg/mL

    What should I do in case of an emergency or overdose?

    In case of an emergency or an overdose, call your local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency room.

    What should I do if I miss a dose?

    If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take your regular dose as scheduled. Do not take a double dose.
