Uses

What is androstenetrione used for?

Androstenetrione is part of a class of drugs known as anabolic steroids. Anabolic steroids, or steroids, are synthetic hormones that mimic or promote testosterone function. These steroids are different from corticosteroids and are used to building muscle, increasing testosterone, and promoting the development of male sex characteristics.

While anabolic steroids are prescribed to treat hormonal issues such as delayed or late-onset puberty, steroids are often misused by male competitive athletes and body builders in order to improve their performance and aesthetics. In these cases, the unauthorized use of steroids or other banned substances to gain a competitive edge is known as “doping.”

Alternative names for androstenetrione are 4-AT and 6-oxo. Manufacturers advertise it as a natural testosterone booster and irreversible aromatase inhibitor that prevents the conversion of testosterone to estradiol (estrogen).

However, an 8-week study done to determine the effects of 6-oxo showed that it had no effect on body composition while it incompletely inhibited aromatase and increased endogenous levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

How should I take androstenetrione?

Precautions & Warnings

What should I know before using androstenetrione?

Anabolic steroids, including androstenetrione, are associated with many negative side effects. These effects include mental and behavioral changes such as aggression (“roid rage”), paranoia, irritability, delusions, and impaired judgement. Physical changes also occur. While anabolic steroids do increase testosterone levels and build muscle, these effects are not permanent and long-term use can result in serious health problems.

Before using this medication, inform your doctor if:

  • You have ever had an allergic reaction to androstenetrione or other anabolic steroids
  • You have a history of allergy to other medications, food, or other substances.
  • You are taking other medications, especially other anabolic steroids.
  • You have underlying health conditions.

Is it safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?

In general, anabolic steroids should not be used by women, especially during pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Female fetuses that are exposed to high levels of testosterone while in the womb may undergo virilization, developing masculine physical characteristics upon birth.
