Uses

Night blooming cereus or “Queen of the Night” is a plant from the cactus family that is native to the Sonoran Desert which spans areas of the states of Arizona, Texas, and the country of Mexico.

The name of the plant comes from the unique, nocturnal blooming of the flowers, which only lasts for several hours. The flowers and stems are the most medically useful portions of the plant. The flower also produces a vanilla-like odor, which can be used in perfumes.

While more analyses need to be done to determine the active constituents, the night blooming cereus may contain cactine alkaloids.

Night blooming cereus has the following uses:

  • Diuretic
  • Sedative
  • Cardiac stimulant
  • Reducing fat and cholesterol blood levels

How does it work?

The exact mechanism of action of night blooming cereus is not known. More studies are required to determine the functions of the active constituents. Consult your doctor or pharmacist for more information.
