Diagnosis and Treatment of Porn Addiction
Porn addiction is not formally included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders of the American Psychiatric Association (DSM-5). The DSM helps medical professionals, and other people related to this field, to identify, diagnose, and treat issues that affect one’s mental health.
However, those who suffer negative effects from high levels of porn consumption are recommended to speak to a counselor. Some doctors add that more studies are needed to create evidence-based treatments for people who may suffer from high volume porn consumption.
Currently, porn addiction is considered part of hypersexual disorder. Two criteria that must be present to diagnose hypersexual disorder include the patient being at least 18 years-old and has experienced the symptoms for at least 6 months.
Key Takeaway
While porn addiction may not be officially diagnosed as an addiction, it is very important to address this issue as it affects the wellbeing of individuals and those around them. It would be best to consult professionals with regards to having porn addiction.
