Maintain a balanced diet

A balanced diet means a mix of lean proteins, carbohydrates, fruits and vegetables, fats, grains, and oils. Without a balanced diet, your organs and tissues don’t work as effectively, and you become more prone to diseases and infections. Eating a wide variety of food is essential.

However, this doesn’t mean you have to completely deprive yourself of sweet treats– moderation is key.

Get enough sleep

The occasional power nap isn’t enough. Your body needs eight hours of uninterrupted, blissful sleep. This is extremely important, especially for children and the elderly. Getting sufficient amounts of sleep can rejuvenate the body.

Take vitamin supplements

Along with having a balanced diet, it is also extremely important that you have sufficient amounts of vitamins and minerals in your diet.

These strengthen your immune system, help heal wounds, and keep your bones strong. Before you purchase any over-the-counter multivitamins, talk to your doctor to find the one that is best for you.

Quit smoking

Pneumonia is an infectious lung disease, so naturally, you have to quit anything that inhabits your lungs, tobacco included. Studies have also found that those who regularly smoke often have a higher risk of getting pneumonia.

Wash your hands regularly

Handwashing helps kills germs, preventing the spread of infectious diseases, such as pneumonia.

It’s important to make handwashing a habit, not just before and after meals but also when you leave the house when you return, or whenever you’ve touched a dirty surface. Make sure to wash your hands for 20 seconds at least.

If you can’t wash your hands, an alcohol-based hand sanitizer is the next best thing. Though alcohol doesn’t quite work the same as hand washing, it has been found to kill germs. You can buy a hand sanitizer at your nearest drugstore.

Get vaccinated yearly

Get yearly flu or pneumonia vaccines, which can offer lifetime protection.

One effective way to prevent pneumonia involves getting vaccinated. There are some companies that offer free vaccinations to their employees, but for those who don’t have that kind of benefit, you can go directly to your nearest health provider and ask to be vaccinated for flu and pneumonia.

Children below five years old also need to get vaccinated because they are more susceptible to infections and other diseases.

Be aware of your general health

Always listen to your body. Know when something is the wrong or when your body needs help. This usually manifests in some common ailments such as cough and colds, and fever. When any of these ailments appear, consult your doctor.

Drink plenty of fluids

Stay away from people who are sick

If you have a family member with a fever, cough, or cold, stay away from him or her. Keep your distance, as droplets from the cough, may transfer to you, making you sick as well.

For many people, getting adequate exercise means going to the gym and lifting some weights. However, what’s important is being active and moving about.

For example, instead of taking the elevator, why not use the stairs? Walk and jog around your neighborhood, or do some yoga. You can also exercise along to some workout videos on YouTube. The bottom line is to always get up and move!

Avoid alcohol

While some studies say that drinking wine is good for you, the problem is when one glass of alcohol becomes, two, three, or more. Then the occasional drink becomes a habit. Keep in mind that drinking too much alcohol can make you prone to diseases and infections.
