Your baby is growing fast and is now the size of a blueberry, measuring at about 1.27 cm long.
Your baby is starting to adapt to the life inside the uterus. During this week, the umbilical cord starts to form, which links you and your baby. The umbilical cord provides oxygen and nutrients from your blood to your baby. It also is able to remove waste from the baby. Additionally, your baby’s lungs, kidneys and gastrointestinal tract are continuing to form. You should also know that your baby’s face is starting to take shape. The eyes, nose, mouth and ears are forming to resemble you and your partner. You are probably feeling excited and anxious to see who your baby will look like. You still have several months to go but you will get to meet you baby soon enough.
You may notice that your breasts are changing. Pregnancy hormones usually cause your breasts to swell and become tender. This is due to the increase in blood flow to the breast area as well as the fat buildup. You may also notice your nipples sticking out more and the dark areas, known as your areola, may look even darker and larger. They will continue to get darker and larger throughout the pregnancy. All these changes are to prepare your breasts for breastfeeding.
You are still in your first trimester and may feel it is too soon to tell people you are pregnant. Don’t worry your secret is safe with us. Your uterus is growing and may or may not protrude outwards. If you’ve been pregnant before, most likely your growing uterus will make your stomach look bigger than your previous pregnancy. This is normal. The abdominal muscles and ligaments have already been stretched once, making it easier and quicker to expand during this pregnancy. Unfortunately, this means you may feel more back pain and pelvic pain earlier. If you still want to keep your pregnancy secret, try wearing more loose fitting clothes. You should tell others bout your pregnancy only when you are ready.
You should let your doctor know if there are any pregnancy symptom that is bothering you or getting worse. You may notice there are certain foods or smells causing you to have more nausea or even make you vomit. These are called pregnancy food aversions, which are very common. Your doctor may suggest ways to relieve your discomfort.
You may or may not have had your first doctors visit yet. If you have, your doctor will only check the usual test during this time. This will include tracking your weight and blood pressure. You may also need to test your urine for high amounts of sugar.
You may have many concerns about the health and safety of you and your baby. Here are some concerns you may have:
When your work requires you to sit in front of a computer all day, you may worry about possible harmful effects on you and your baby. For years, there have been stories that have suggested there is a link between pregnant women using computers for a prolonged time and miscarriages. We can confidently tell you that this is not true. There still needs to be more studies to prove this theory. The harmful effect that has been proven is sitting for a prolonged time, leading to poor blood circulation. It is recommended to stand up and take a walk at least every hour in between computer screen time. You can try stretching or walking up and down the stairs to get your blood pumping.
To be safe, you should avoid smoky areas. If you go to a restaurant, ask to be seated in the non-smoking area. Cigarette smoke has been linked to complications in the placenta. This can lead to lower birth weight and possibly lower IQ in your baby. Although these complications have not yet been proven, it is best to avoid secondhand smoke when possible. You know that smoking is harmful to the baby. You can also get harmful effects by inhaling someone else’s smoke.
